Ignorance is bliss, tis folly to be wise?

Ignorance is bliss. Does this explain why religion is so popular? because if someone doesnt know something they can just say god did it and be happy instead of spending some time to find the real answer and be sad, if ignorance is bliss tis folly to be wise.
