What side of rings go on piston the chrome or the other side on a 250 polaris?

my son put them in all new wiseco 20 over but it only ran almost a tank of gas and quit , took it apart today nothing stuck or broke could the rings be up side down. One side has chrome the other doesn't. Any help thank you.
