Polaris 94 2x4 engine starts but i cant get any of my gears to engage?

got from a friend and i've rode it before, but when he gave it to me it had this problem. i can turn it on and the throttle works but i what ever gear i put it in it wont spin the axles. im not to sure what to do so im guttng it and tinkering. need help really badly
